ARIEL BOWEN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
142 years of Service
Ariel Bowen United Methodist Church: A Legacy of Service
Ariel Bowen United Methodist Church began as a Sunday school class in a private home within the Pittsburgh community of Atlanta, Georgia. In 1882, with the support of the Freedman’s Aid Society and Dr. Wilbur P. Thirkield, president of Clark College, two bush-covered lots were purchased at the intersection of Arthur and Gate City Streets. The lots were cleared, and a Bush Arbor was constructed, under which the Methodist Church was organized as the Gate City Methodist Episcopal Church, with Rev. H. M. White as its first pastor.
In 1890, a church edifice and a parsonage were built on the two lots. The church was renamed in 1904 in memory of Mrs. Ariel Serena Hodge Bowen, a dedicated member of the church and the Atlanta community. Mrs. Bowen was an educator, musician, writer, and social reformer.
The current facility was constructed in 1939 under the leadership of Rev. J. H. Bridges. The mortgage was burned in a celebratory ceremony in 1944, presided over by Bishop L. H. King. Groundbreaking for the Education Unit took place on March 31, 1985, and the building was dedicated in honor of Mrs. Eleanor McCoy on June 4, 1995.
For over 139 years, Ariel Bowen United Methodist Church has proudly served the Pittsburgh community. This commitment to service was recognized when the church received the prestigious Phoenix Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a religious organization, from Mayor Kasim Reed of Atlanta, Georgia.
